Attappadi in Palakkad
Attappady, located in the Mannarkkad area of Palakkad district, is one of Kerala's largest tribal settlements, home to the Irulas, Mudugas, and Kurumbas. These tribes, each with their distinct lifestyles, cultures, and eating habits, live in hamlets known as Oorus, of which there are currently 192 in the region. The name "Attappady" is derived from the words atta (blood leech) and pad (habitation). Among Kerala's tribal communities, the Attappady tribes are considered the most marginalized. Their economy is deeply rooted in traditional practices centered around the land and forest, which they regard with reverence as manifestations of the divine.

Nature holds a sacred place in the lives of the Attappady tribes, with trees, mountains, streams, and animals considered divine. Agricultural activities, from sowing to harvesting, are carried out in a spirit of celebration, often marked by rituals such as Kootake and Kampla. Before planting seeds, the Mannakkaran leads a worship ceremony dedicated to the earth. This harmonious relationship with nature extends to their farming practices, where a portion of crops is intentionally left for wild animals, reflecting their belief in the land's shared ownership.
The region is known for its unique traditions, such as the worship of the mountain peak Malleeswaran, viewed as a massive Siva-linga. The Sivarathri celebrations at the Malleeswaram Temple are among the area's most significant cultural events. Nestled below the Nilgiri Hills in the Western Ghats, Attappady is a stunning mountain valley at the headwaters of the Bhavani River.
The Adivasis of Attappady rely on small-scale, rain-fed farming in the drylands, cultivating millets and other small grains without fertilizers. This selfless, eco-conscious approach and deep cultural heritage make Attappady a remarkable and unique region in Kerala.
